Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada se declaró culpable de dos cargos relacionados al narcotráfico en una corte de Nueva York, en Estados Unidos.
“Culpable”, dijo Zambada en español con voz casi inaudible, de los cargos de empresa criminal continuada y actividades de crimen organizado dentro de un grupo criminal, por los que pidió perdón tras reconocer que “promovió la corrupción de policía, mandos militares y políticos” en México.
Estos cargos se derivan de su papel durante décadas al frente del cártel de Sinaloa junto con el narcotraficante encarcelado Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, que cumple cadena perpetua en una prisión de máxima seguridad en Colorado.
Zambada aceptó declararse culpable después de que el Departamento de Justicia dijera este mes que no pediría la pena de muerte para Zambada ni para Rafael Caro Quintero, otro capo mexicano detenido en Estados Unidos.
Zambada fue detenido en julio de 2024 junto a Joaquín Guzmán López, uno de los hijos de Guzmán, después de que el avión en el que viajaban aterrizara en una pequeña pista de Nuevo México.
