En una rueda de prensa en Quito con la ministra de Relaciones Exteriores de Ecuador, Gabriela Sommerfeld, Rubio aseguró que “en Venezuela están involucrados” con el tráfico de drogas e insistió en que un gran jurado y la Fiscalía en EE.UU. ya encausaron al presidente venezolano, Nicolás Maduro, como “un líder del narco“.
Marco Rubio consideró equivocada la noción de que Venezuela no es un importante foco donde se origina el tráfico de drogas e incluso aseguró que le “da igual lo que diga la ONU” a ese respecto porque el sistema de Justicia estadounidense considera probado que el país caribeño es “un estado narcotraficante”.
