“Creo que cualquier decisión de tomar medidas contra el cártel en México, nuestro primer deseo sería que se hiciera en colaboración con México”, dijo durante su comparecencia en el Comité de Relaciones Exteriores del Senado.
Sin embargo, también consideró que “si llegara el caso de que la vida de los ciudadanos estadounidenses estuviera en riesgo, creo que todas las cartas están sobre la mesa”.
Johnson prometió impulsar la defensa de la seguridad nacional, principalmente en la frontera, ante el tráfico ilegal de drogas y personas.
“Nuestra relación con México es de suma importancia y complejidad (…) las recientes medidas de México para asegurar la frontera demuestran la fuerza de nuestra alianza, incluyendo el despliegue de 10 mil efectivos de la Guardia Nacional en la frontera y la aceptación de la deportación de migrantes”, dijo.
El político se dijo positivo de la nueva administración en México, encabezada por Claudia Sheinbaum, aunque destacó que ella no lleva mucho tiempo en el poder.
“Creo que hay oportunidades para que trabajemos juntos más estrechamente, en particular en lo que respecta al intercambio de información de inteligencia con las fuerzas que rastrearon precursores químicos y el envío de drogas hacia y desde México”, añadió.
