El presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, firmó el viernes un decreto que rebautiza el Departamento de Defensa como el Departamento de Guerra, una decisión que a su parecer manda un “mensaje de victoria” al mundo.
“Es un nombre mucho más apropiado a la vista de cómo está el mundo ahora mismo”, dijo Trump a los periodistas en el Despacho Oval, flanqueado por el nuevo “secretario de Guerra”, Pete Hegseth.
“Tras ganar una guerra de independencia en 1789, George Washington creó el Departamento de Guerra”, recordó Hegseth.
“Y este país ganó todas las grandes guerras después de eso, incluidas la Primera Guerra Mundial y la Segunda Guerra Mundial”, añadió.
El cambio de Departamento de Guerra a Defensa ocurrió después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en 1947, y “como usted señaló, señor Presidente, no hemos ganado una guerra importante desde entonces, y con eso no quiero menospreciar a nuestros combatientes”, dijo.
El ahora Departamento de Guerra, cuya sede es el edificio en las afueras de Washington conocido como el Pentágono, tiene más de tres millones de empleados militares y civiles.
Las Fuerzas Armadas estadunidenses son las más potentes del mundo, aunque bajo la creciente competencia de China.
