Tocó tierra el huracán “Melissa” en Jamaica

Melissa tocó tierra hoy martes en el suroeste de la isla de Jamaica, cerca de la ciudad de New Hope, como un poderoso huracán categoría 5, con vientos máximos sostenidos de hasta 295 kilómetros por hora, informó el Centro Nacional de Huracanes de Estados Unidos.

El huracán Melissa se acercaba a Jamaica el martes como una tormenta catastrófica de categoría 5, la más fuerte que ha golpeado la isla desde que se comenzaron a llevar registros hace 174 años.

Horas antes de la tormenta, el gobierno de Jamaica dijo que había hecho todo lo posible para prepararse, mientras advertía sobre daños catastróficos. Las calles de la capital, Kingston, permanecían en gran parte vacías, excepto por un perro callejero solitario cruzando charcos y un puñado de personas caminando rápidamente bajo ramas de árboles que se agitaban con un viento fuerte.
