El Pentágono lanzó la operación militar “Lanza del sur” sin explicar los objetivos y las implicaciones de este paso en su estrategia contra el narcotráfico en el Caribe y generando mayor tensión en plena presión de la administración del presidente, Donald Trump, sobre Venezuela.
Esta operación fue anunciada por el secretario de Guerra, Pete Hegseth, en su cuenta oficial de X, definiéndola como una misión que busca expulsar a los “narcoterroristas” del hemisferio y proteger a Estados Unidos “de las drogas”.
El anuncio de Hegseth no fue acompañado de contexto ni de la temporalidad de la misión, por lo que generó dudas sobre si se trata de un renombramiento de los operativos que el Comando Sur realiza en aguas internacionales desde agosto en el Caribe y el Pacífico contra lanchas que supuestamente transportan drogas o si es un nuevo paso de la estrategia con operativos aún no anunciados.
Horas antes de la noticia del Pentágono, el secretario de Estado, Marco Rubio, descartó la presencia de fuerzas militares en México y rechazó emprender “acciones unilaterales” en el país vecino contra el narcotráfico sin que las autoridades del país lo pidan.
Sin embargo, en el caso de Venezuela y Colombia, Trump no descartó posibles ataques a objetivos terrestres, según anunció en octubre en diferentes intervenciones en el Despacho Oval.
Ataques en el Pacífico y el Caribe
Bajo el argumento de combatir el narcotráfico, la administración de Donald Trump escaló su ofensiva contra carteles latinoamericanos que considera terroristas y a quienes ha declarado un “conflicto armado directo”.
Desde agosto, las fuerzas estadounidenses han reforzado sus operaciones en el Caribe y el Pacífico oriental, desplegando en la región tropas y buques de guerra. En septiembre, Washington empezó a atacar lanchas argumentando que estaban vinculadas al narcotráfico y hasta el momento ha hundido al menos 20 embarcaciones y ha matado a 75 personas que viajaban a bordo.
La ONU ha rechazado estos ataques por violar el derecho internacional.
El despliegue militar de Estados Unidos incluye desde hace tres días el portaaviones Gerald R. Ford, el más grande del Pentágono, y todo su grupo de ataque, más de cuatro mil marineros y decenas de aeronaves tácticas.
Washington también mandó fuerzas terrestres a Panamá, la primera vez en más de dos décadas que el Ejército estadounidense desplaza al país tropas convencionales. Tanto Estados Unidos como Panamá han negado que ese movimiento tenga algo que ver con las operaciones del Caribe, que, según informes oficiales, han servido para incautar más de 76 mil libras de drogas.
