El Departamento del Tesoro estadounidense sancionó este lunes a la red Los Chapitos por facilitar la producción y el tráfico ilegal de fentanilo, y también a dos de sus líderes, que se encuentran fugitivos y por los que ofreció hasta 10 millones de dólares por información que lleve a su arresto o condena.
Según su comunicado, los laboratorios controlados por Los Chapitos son responsables de introducir fentanilo en pastillas falsificadas fabricadas por el cártel de Sinaloa y traficadas a Estados Unidos.
El Tesoro estadounidense también considera que hombres armados vinculados al cartel de Sinaloa estuvieron involucrados en el asesinato del exmarine estadounidense Nicholas Quets, ocurrido el 18 de octubre de 2024 en Sonora, México.
La Oficina de Control de Activos Extranjeros (OFAC) del departamento sancionó igualmente a Archivaldo Iván Guzmán Salazar y Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, hijos del líder del cartel de Sinaloa, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
A través de su Programa de Recompensas por Narcóticos ofreció una recompensa separada de hasta 10 millones de dólares por información que conduzca al arresto y condena de cada uno de ellos.
El secretario del Tesoro, Scott Bessent, declaró que Los Chapitos “son una facción poderosa e hiperviolenta del cártel de Sinaloa, líder del tráfico de fentanilo a Estados Unidos”, y que con estas medidas se está cumpliendo el mandato del presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, “de eliminar por completo los carteles de la droga y combatir a líderes violentos como los hijos de ‘El Chapo’”.
