EFE.- El presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, anunció este lunes que conmutará las sentencias de 37 personas condenadas a muerte a nivel federal, en una decisión adoptada cuando falta menos de un mes para que abandone el cargo.
Todas las sentencias conmutadas se reclasificarán y se convertirán en cadena perpetua sin posibilidad de libertad condicional, informó Biden en un comunicado.
El mandatario demócrata ha emitido más conmutaciones en el final de su presidencia que cualquiera de sus predecesores recientes en el mismo momento de sus primeros mandatos, según indica la Casa Blanca en un comunicado.
El presidente demócrata, que dejará el cargo el próximo 20 de enero, “ha dedicado su carrera a reducir los delitos violentos y garantizar un sistema de justicia justo y eficaz” y “cree que Estados Unidos debe poner fin al uso de la pena de muerte a nivel federal, excepto en casos de terrorismo y asesinatos en masa motivados por el odio”, explica la nota.
Recuerda que “cuando el presidente Biden asumió el cargo, su administración impuso una moratoria a las ejecuciones federales, y sus medidas de hoy impedirán que la próxima administración confirme las sentencias de ejecución que no se dictarían con la política y la práctica actuales”.
A principios de este mes, el presidente estadounidense anunció el indulto para aproximadamente mil 500 estadounidenses (la mayor cantidad en un solo día) que han demostrado una rehabilitación exitosa y un compromiso con hacer que las comunidades sean más seguras.
Esto incluyó conmutaciones de sentencias para casi mil 500 personas que fueron puestas en confinamiento domiciliario durante la pandemia de Covid-19 y que se han reintegrado con éxito a sus familias y comunidades, así como 39 indultos para personas que fueron condenadas por delitos no violentos.
El presidente Biden también es el primer presidente en otorgar indultos categóricos a personas condenadas por el simple uso y posesión de marihuana, y a exmiembros de las Fuerzas Armadas que pertenecen al colectivo LGBTQI+ condenados por conducta privada debido a su orientación sexual.
Entre los beneficiados por la decisión de hoy de Biden hay varios hispanos, entre ellos, Daniel Troya y Ricardo Sánchez Jr., condenados a muerte en Florida en 2010 por matar a cuatro personas de una familia en un ajuste de cuentas relacionado con drogas.
También el pandillero de la mara Salvatrucha salvadoreña Jorge Avila-Torrez, condenado por asesinar a dos niñas en 2005 y a un oficial naval en 2009, verá conmutada su pena, así como Edgar Baltazar García, de origen mexicano y que fue condenado a muerte en 2010 por haber matado a otro recluso en la cárcel de Beaumont, en Texas.
