El Consejo de Administración de Grupo Televisa aprobó una solicitud de Emilio Azcárraga Jean, presidente ejecutivo del órgano, para tomar licencia con efecto inmediato mientras se realiza una investigación por el Departamento de Justicia de Estados Unidos en relación con la Federación Internacional de Futbol Asociación (FIFA).
“Grupo Televisa dio a conocer que su Consejo de Administración aprobó una propuesta del Sr. Emilio Azcárraga Jean, Presidente Ejecutivo del Consejo, para tomar licencia, con efecto inmediato, en tanto se resuelve la investigación que está llevando a cabo el Departamento de Justicia. La compañía sigue cooperando con la investigación”, señaló la empresa en su reporte financiero del tercer trimestre publicado este jueves.
El caso, que había sido revelado inicialmente por Televisa el 30 de agosto, involucra presuntos sobornos a directivos de la FIFA para obtener los derechos de transmisión de los mundiales de futbol de 2018, 2022, 2026 y 2030.
Azcárraga Jean, quien ha liderado Televisa durante más de dos décadas, tras suceder a su padre quien fundó la empresa en 1973, y es una de las figuras más influyentes en los medios de comunicación en México y Latinoamérica, decidió apartarse de su cargo en medio de las crecientes presiones legales que enfrenta el conglomerado.
A finales de agosto, Televisa informó que había tenido conocimiento de que la investigación que realiza Estados Unidos relacionada con FIFA podría tener un “impacto material” en su situación financiera o resultados de operación.
“La compañía no puede predecir el resultado de la investigación o si efectivamente tendrá un impacto material. Estamos cooperando con la investigación”, indicó entonces al público inversionista.
La investigación forma parte de un caso más amplio que involucra a varias empresas y directivos en el esquema de corrupción conocido como “FIFAgate”, que ha sacudido al mundo del futbol en los últimos años.
Desde la revelación de la reapertura del caso en agosto, las acciones de Televisa han mostrado cierta volatilidad en los mercado.
Sin embargo, Azcárraga Jean continuará vinculado a la empresa, aunque con su licencia, el conglomerado televisivo enfrenta un desafío clave en medio de un contexto ya complejo para la industria mediática en México y a nivel global.
El Departamento de Justicia señaló a la televisora de “inflar artificialmente” el precio de sus certificados de depósito estadounidenses (ADR) al ocultar sobornos por 15 millones de dólares para obtener los derechos de la Copa del Mundo para 2018, 2022, 2026 y 2030.
En 2023, Televisa logró un acuerdo para pagar 95 millones de dólares de una demanda colectiva a cambio de que los peticionarios renunciaran al recurso legal, en donde argumentaron que se les ocultó una supuesta violación a la Ley de Valores de Estados Unidos por inflar artificialmente sus acciones.
