Nueva Orleans elige a una inmigrante mexicana su nueva alcaldesa

Helena Moreno, nacida en Xalapa, Veracruz, se convirtió en la segunda mujer y la primera latina en ser electa alcaldesa de Nueva Orleans con el 55% de los votos, evitando una segunda vuelta. La experiodista y exconcejala asumirá el cargo el 1 de enero de 2026, en medio de retos como la recuperación tras huracanes, violencia urbana y la necesidad de fortalecer la economía y la seguridad local.

Moreno emigró a Texas a los ocho años, estudió periodismo en la Universidad Metodista del Sur y se destacó por su cobertura del huracán Katrina, que le valió un premio Emmy. En 2008 decidió dedicarse a la política, siendo elegida miembro de la Cámara de Representantes de Luisiana y en 2017 obteniendo un escaño en el Concejo Municipal de Nueva Orleans, donde ha promovido gestión pública y transparencia.

Su campaña recibió apoyos de figuras nacionales como Kamala Harris y artistas como Lenny Kravitz. Moreno enfrenta desafíos políticos importantes, como la presencia de la Guardia Nacional impulsada por el gobernador Jeff Landry, y asegura que las soluciones deben surgir desde la comunidad, no desde Washington.
