AP.- Los líderes opositores venezolanos María Corina Machado y Edmundo González Urrutia fueron reconocidos con la máxima distinción de la Unión Europea en materia de derechos humanos, el Premio Sajarov, anunció la presidenta del Parlamento Europeo, Roberta Metsola, el jueves.
Machado era la candidata de la oposición para enfrentarse a Nicolás Maduro en las disputadas elecciones presidenciales de julio, hasta que fue inhabilitada por el gobierno, y González, que nunca se había presentado a unos comicios hasta entonces, ocupó su puesto semanas después.
Después de la cita electoral se produjo una represión generalizada, que incluyó inhabilitaciones, detenciones y violaciones de los derechos humanos.
Tras la votación, Machado se escondió por temor a su vida y una Corte venezolana emitió una orden de detención contra González, que se exilió a España.
“En su búsqueda de una transición de poder justa, libre y pacífica, han defendido sin miedo valores que millones de venezolanos y el Parlamento Europeo estimamos: justicia, democracia y Estado de derecho”, dijo Metsola a los eurodiputados.
“Este parlamento está con el pueblo de Venezuela y con María y Edmundo en su lucha por el futuro democrático de su país”, apuntó, añadiendo que “confiamos en que Venezuela y la democracia acabarán imponiéndose”.
El grupo de Machado sostiene que tiene pruebas de que González ganó las elecciones del 28 de julio por un amplio margen frente a Maduro, a pesar de que el líder se proclamó vencedor.
El triunfo de Maduro fue cuestionado por observadores independientes, incluyendo Naciones Unidas. En una resolución el mes pasado, el Parlamento Europeo reconoció a González como el presidente legítimo de Venezuela.
En una publicación en la red social X, antes Twitter, González se mostró “honrado y agradecido” por el reconocimiento.
Dio las gracias a Machado, a quien describió como “una persona excepcional que con todo su talento político, su entrega absoluta y su espíritu indomable abrió el camino que transitamos actualmente, manteniendo viva la llama de la libertad en nuestro país”.
