La Administración de Donald Trump recurre a por lo menos 150 cárceles locales para retener a migrantes, ante una subida del 49 por ciento en la cifra de personas que están detenidas por el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE, en inglés), desde que comenzó su presidencia en enero.
El ICE tenía 55 mil 568 migrantes bajo custodia en la primera mitad de julio, casi 18 mil más que los 37 mil 317 de finales de enero, según los últimos datos oficiales de la agencia, que usa cárceles de condados, prisiones federales, y nuevos centros de detención, como ‘Alligator Alcatraz‘ en Florida, para lidiar con esta subida.
En este contexto, ICE tuvo en junio 436 sitios “activos”, que retuvieron al menos a una persona en el mes, un incremento del 7.13 por ciento frente a los 407 de enero, cuando comenzó la gestión de Trump, y 14.44 por ciento más que el mismo mes de 2024, documenta Vera, organización civil que indaga las detenciones.
Esta y otras asociaciones han documentado migrantes en sitios no reportados en los informes de ICE, por lo que la Prison Policy Initiative registró un promedio de 10 mil 547 retenidos en 80 cárceles locales entre mayo y junio, mientras que The Marshall Project identificó 6 mil 600 detenidos en 150 cárceles locales.
